What is the Accessible Business Mark®™?

Do I qualify?

The standard provided by the Accessible Business Mark®™ brings together a number of existing standards and codes of practice such as British Standard 8300, British Standard 9999 formerly BS 5588 (Part 8), Publicly Available Standard (PAS) 78 regarding website standards (soon to become a British Standard in its' own right), Part M of the Building Regulations issued by the Government and the "Sign Design" standard issued by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). These standards are incorporated within this easily recognised Accessible Business Mark®™ symbol although remain standards and codes of practice in their own right.

The Accessible Business Mark®™ introduced on this website allows businesses to self-certify, after signing up, to display the fact that they have considered and met as many of the minimum standards as possible set in the codes of practice stated above, the needs of disabled people within the built environment and product design. Self-certification for the Accessibility Assistance Accredited®™ mark is subject to a minimum of one mystery shopping visit by qualified assessors. Products will be subject to a separate assessment by an independent and fully qualified panel of experts before the Accessibility Design Accredited®™ mark can be downloaded or provided for display.

SMP award the Accessible Business Mark®™ according to the standards for the built environment set by the British Standards Institute; we award the Accessible Business Mark®™ according to the standards set by the RNIB for signage; and we award the Accessible Business Mark®™ according to standards for website design set jointly between the RNIB and the British Standards Institute. Products are awarded the Accessible Business Mark®™ only once they have passed rigorous testing by our panel of independent experts for use by disabled people.
